Tour of my apartment

Hello Voyeurs: you want to see what it looks like inside my apartment? THis is when it was really messy a few weeks ago - it's cleaner now, but I don't want to take more pictures.

THis is my kitchen. I have an apron from Gourmet magazine.

My bathrrom:

You can see part of my TV. And all of my laptop!

Ikea bookshelf with lots of stuff - including *Donnie* - and look! another computer. I must be rich.

that's my bed. ah-cha-cha! and my old A/C unit. so many memories!

There's the front door. That's where you would walk in if you came over. All the quilts on the wall: it's like the American Folk Art Museum in here!

mr. F

he is here, right now, on my bed! don't believe me? here he is, as I am typing this post!:

and he gave me such sweet kisses when he came in. now he is sleeping. evidently he hasn't had anything to eat in a day and a half (by choice. remember, he is a dandy, and he prefers you call him 'trim' rather than 'gaunt'). yesterday andy and sam took friedrich for a walk to get breakfast tacos (in the afternoon), and andy said friedrich was panting hard and later limping. my poor little puppy monster!

andy was (I guess at this moment still is, I just can't see him) wearing these new maroon cords, I've never seen him in pants that colorful, and I told him he looked british. it's funny how sometimes when I see him I feel the impulse to kiss him, make out or something. part of me thinks it is just a reflex - seven and half years kissing and making out and what not with the same person must make some pretty deep neuronal pathways - but then I think about it for half a second and realize that I probably think about making out with most decent looking guys who are funny and nice and standing in my apartment in front of me. this fact is very reassuring.

Glasses

So I left my gym bag in my car Tuesday, and it kinda fried my glasses. Very strange - my glasses and lotion bottle are totally warped, but the shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer/sunscreen, and contact solution bottles are unharmed! Oh, and the contact solution in the contact case had mostly evaporated. Very strange - it was as if a sunbeam had concentrated itself on one corner of my gym bag.

I can no longer wear the glasses. Rather, I can wear them, but they don't stay on my face well, the lenses look like they will fall out, and I would def not wear them driving. But do not fret, for this cloud has a silver lining: I put on my old glasses and I love them! So cute. I forgot. I will probably spend the buckers (if required, which I think it will be because the damage is pretty extreme) to get the others fixed next month. Economic stimulus? Oh! Brain flash: maybe it is covered under a warranty - it has been less than a year, after all.

Here are my new plants:
They have yet to flower, but that's because I just planted them Monday. Here are the flowers my mother potted for my birthday gift:

There are wine cups and alysum and some kind of lupine, I believe.

Speeding Motorcycle

On Sunday, Pam and I went to see Speeding Motorcycle, a musical at Zach Scott. The songs and concepts are Daniel Johnston's - there is even an appearance by Jeremiah the Frog. I had a nice time. The atmosphere was very fun and touching, just like his music.

So, I think that makes four cultural events for me this year so far:
-Avant Cinema at the Film Society featuring the work of filmmaker Scott Stark.
-It is Fine! Everything is Fine. Slide show and film screening featuring Crispin Hellion Glover narrating his slide show and doing a Q&A following the movie.
-Lichtenstein exhibit at the Austin Museum of Art.
-Speeding Motorcycle at Zach Scott.

I guess five if you count the local documentary I went to see with the filmmakers, but I don't feel like counting that one.

And in the coming months:
-March 7 - 15, SXSW Film Festival. Passes went on sale on February 9th! I hope I can still get mine, I'll be going tomorrow.
-March 12 - 16, SXSW Music Festival. I will be entering the drawing to get a discounted wristband, and if I win the lottery, I will definitely go. However, if my name is not drawn, I would have to pay the full price, and I may not go. But there are several people I would like to see.
-April 5, Xiu Xiu. Thank you, Jesus! Great birthday present.
-Mid-April, Carmen.
-June, Die Fledermaus. Actually, I don't know if I can handle this retelling - it's "Austintacious" with cowboys and tech millionaires.

I just read Women As Lovers and it broke my heart.

Along with a few coworkers, I will be making lunch for some families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in early March. I am trying to work with the UT Volunteer Corps and volunteer at sessions to help kids and parents fill out FAFSA paperwork and learn about college. I will be helping out at Expanding Your Horizons on March 29. I am going to the Art Show fundraiser meeting next week for Choices for Children, and it looks like I will be the volunteer coordinator for an annual fundraiser for a local theater group.

I voted today.

I've also been working on some music for the accordian and other art projects. Maybe one day I will finish one I am brave enough to share. That would be nice.

I will post pictures of my new apartment soon.

I did a lot of thinking last year and decided there was a lot in my life I wanted to do differently. It appears I am heading in the right direction.

Pandy Bear and I are getting separate apartments. It remains to be determined how we will split up our foursome, but it seems that P Bear really really wants Mr. F. Yikes. It may be me and the bun. Anyway, P Bear doesn't hate me anymore. I really wanted this, and we're not breaking up. just some sssssssssssppppppppppppppppppppaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacccccccccccccceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

So gross!

In the picture above, you can see the brown-ness our blue couch has acquired over time. So gross! I guess at least it matches the pillows.

Why do I feel like I'm running out of time?

No accordian playing, no piano playing.
So little cooking last week - but hopefully remedied in the next.
No running last week, either. What looked like injury may be illness (again with the swelling and weakness, ah!). Blood drawn, blood pressure high!, cultures taken, results in the next few days. Maybe viral?
More rental shopping, no house purchasing. But I am confused about him...

So little music, filmmaking, writing and cooking. Oh Well.

Here is a picture of Stuart:

Look how long his nails were! We do a much better job trimming them now. That is good for his health.

Happy Birthday!

Today is Friedrich's birthday. He is 6 years old.

He had two treats at lunch, and this evening we took him to PetsMart. We bought him a squeaky gorilla and bac n' cheese treats (with real cheese, but not bacon). I think he definitely had fun. But he has no idea what in the hell day it is.

Bad girl

I ordered stamps from the post office last Monday. They arrived today. TODAY, one whole week later. And in a gigantic priority mail envelope. WTF? The postal worker came to our mailbox everyday except Sunday. That means they had five chances to bring me stamps from where they work, I don't get it! If someone knows more about this mystery, please tell me.

Not all bad news, Andy rearranged the furniture to how I suggested last year. It looks awesome! Our living room feels so much bigger, and the TV no longer dominates everything - I am happy.

And good good news: I got a call for a phone interview that will happen on Friday. I applied for this job over a week ago, and it's one I'm super excited about. But I'm not going to say anything more yet.

Ow, my wrists hurt. No more typing!

BUg(s) in the Rice

Last night I made some brown rice. It's been in the pantry for a while, but not more than 2 or 3 months. There were a few cobwebs in the bag. Little teeny strings - I wouldn't have noticed except some rice was hanging from it. I made the rice anyway. It would cook any bug that was in there, and from the looks of it, the bugs would be really small (I didn't see any).

So the rice was done and some cooked bug was laying on top. It was brown and about a centimeter long. Looked kinda like a shrimp. Took it out and ate the rice with stir fry. Yummy!

For Twinkle Toes

You asked what is shaking. Here it goes:

Up at 6 AM. Work at 7. Very, very sore from practicing Wii baseball so oneday I will beat Pandy Bear. Listened to Martha Wainwright Martha Wainwright (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her), Kate Bush Aerial, Tori Boys, PJ, pet shop boys, Transformers soundtrack, and assorted podcasts. Spinach salad with tomotoes, salmon, cucumber and dressing for lunch. Scanned and cleaned scanner. More soreness, black ink on nails (which are longer than ever because I am too lazy to cut them. Good thing my toe nails don't grow so fast!)

Deposited check from Pandy Bear (for services rendered), got change to do laundry.

Thought about grad school, job, my This is Good Shit! Chocolate Cake that I will be making for this weekend (for future reference: do not buy chocolate for a cake a week in advance because I will consume most of it), and should I wait for it to stop raining before I take Friedrich out?

Read article from New York Times Magazine about adaptationist and byproduct views of evolution of belief in God (just in time for conversation mom and I had last week. Mom: So why do people believe in God and religion? Me: Um, well, if it has a biological basis, which I believe it does, it is somehow tied to evolution and principles of natural selection. It has to be beneficial or be linked to something beneficial... Mom: Like what? Me: I don't know. Mom continues asking questions with no answers, I continue saying more or less the same thing over and over). I like this Atran guy. Dawkins strikes me as unnecessarily defensive, explosive. Can't we all just get along?

Read other thesis students' two page summaries of thesis. Alton Brown is making things in parchment pouches. I wish Pandy Bear ate fish.

Will I ever be able to enjoy a glass of wine or good martini with little physical problem again? Annual salary: 21, 264. Wtf? It seemed like so much when I wasn't working. I would love to have another bunny, but evidentally, male rabbits are prone to fight with each other, and they molest female rabbits constantly. Dell wireless is fraught with problems.

Coconut sorbet is yummy. Antony and the Johnsons is waiting for me at the library. Library instead of Netflix? I could save about $13 a month. I haven't read a novel since January. I love this neighborhood. I want lots of fruit trees! I prefer rain to cloudy sky.

I tried to include pictures, but for some reason uploading one small photo of Mr. F was taking over 10 minutes, so you'll have to be patient.

PS Kelly broke down when the guy tried to rape her at the dealer's where she was buying coke. Brandon *sigh* rescued her, and she's in rehab now. I know you all were wondering.

Sicky-pooh

So it finally happened. I slept like crap Monday night (poor Pandy Bear was coughing all night) and the next day I felt pretty scary. Dizzy, sore throat, etc. But I went to work anyway. So dizzy and feverish all Tuesday, but I stupidly stayed at work. Luckily, not many people were there, so I don't think I infected anyone. Yesterday I went to the doctor, stayed home from work, and bought me some pseudoephedrines from the pharmacy. (now they know when I bought the stuff so when my meth lab blows up they can connect the dots). It hasn't been terrible, my fever only got to about 100 (normal on a thermometer for me is usually 97.8 - I have trouble getting it to 98.6), and I feel a lot better today. But so tired!

All season, I've been secretly congratulating myself on avoiding the usual sinus infection/cold-virus/strep throat crap that is the norm this time of year. In late January, when the shit hit the fan and coworkers started dropping like flies from colds and whatnot, I started being extra diligent about washing my hands, taking my probiotics and emergen-c. Then Pandy Bear got really sick on Valentine's Day. I hit the Wellness drops hard, continuously drank water, and pumped him and me full of oscillo. homeopathic flu remedy. I felt fine. And so proud. Pandy Bear started recovering, too, and by Friday was back at work (against my advice).

Then he went out Saturday and had several beers. Up late. Same story Sunday night. By Monday, he was sneezing out what looked like moldy pizza (his description) and the doctor diagnosed him with a sinus-infection and bronchitis. It was just too much for me. Now the two of us have spent this week moaning and lying around. Mr. F has sensed our pain and been extra cuddly. I just hope we get this out of our systems by next week! And next flu/cold season, Pandy Bear is getting the full preventive treatment so we might both get away with no colds!

What makes nagging nagging?

I pondered this question as I stared at the melted cheese cemented onto the kitchen plate. A-hole had neglected, yet again, to rinse his dish off completely before leaving it in the sink. He also left out the ridiculous stove-top popcorn popper with burned popcorn and oil all in the bottom. These things are not big deals in and of themselves, but anyone who has roomed with other individuals knows that mostly it's the little things that tend to build up, one on top another, until it's just too much.

Here's my dilemma: I hate the word nag. I loathe it. It makes me feel sick to my stomach. Why? Because I feel it is used unfairly. Really, what's wrong with asking or telling someone to do something when it's their job, something they've committed to, something they've promised to do? So, How is nag used unfairly? you ask. Because a man is never accused of nagging. My mother never said to my father, "Quit nagging." Those ridiculous caricatures of humans on sitcoms never accuse the dad or husband of nagging. I think part of the reason is that women often ask. "Will you blah blah blah?" "Can you blah blah blah?" It automatically places them below their men. Well, no more asking! I am demanding, I am commanding that these things be done.

So this is what I said: "I'm gonna rip off your balls and shove them down your throat next time you don't rinse off your plate." Then I asked A-hole if it sounded like I was nagging. "No, threatening," said he. Yes, mission accomplished! Now I'm not a whiny, pathetic female but a violent, vindictive bitch.

PS Most of this is tongue in cheek. I love my Pandy Bear! I get very lazy with dishes sometimes, not to mention cleaning the tub, etc. But I am concerned about being labeled a nag. Hate that word!

Second to last Thursday of the month

Pandy Bear and I have a new tradition. This will be the second month in a row that on the third Thursday (aka the second to last Thursday of the month) we have celebrated by having a float. No reason in particular. I just read in Real Simple or some other silly magazine that having a tradition is a way to make your abode more home-y. Since I'm not religious, and since there are already enough traditions in the fall/winter, I decided that the summer was as good as time as any to start.

And tonight is great for Float Night. The season premieres of The Office and Grey's Anatomy are on tonight. Yeah, TV! Pandy wants to watch The Office, and don't get me wrong, I do to, but I really want to watch Grey's. He wins, though. He had four cavities filled today! I can watch tomorrow at 8 pm when they rerun the Grey's premiere.

Yes, so Pandy had four cavities filled today. He looked hilarious! His cheeks were so puffy, and he was walking around the apartment with him mouth slightly open. I couldn't stop laughing.

The first Float Night was soooooooo much fun. I know, tradition with food, desserty-snack food, no less, very typical, unoriginal, and unhealthy. That's why it's only once a month! No big commitment, not expensive, just me and Pandy feeling like kids. What more could you want?

And here is a picture of my mother's new puppy, a beatiful little girl named Lilly who came from the city pound. Don't you just love her one-eyedness?

UPDATE: The best news! The Office premiere is at 7:30, not 8:30. Yippee! Now I can watch both!

Eggs Benedict w/o the Spinach

So I have thrown away the spinach in our fridge. We buy a brand that sells organic spinach and salad mix in those clamshell boxes, and this brand was listed as one of those being pulled from the shelves. Kinda sucks. Love me some spinach! Last night, A-hole made fun of me for throwing it out. Must I remind him I have a compromised immune system, and this strain of e. coli is not welcome in my gut?

So, while on the topic of veggies, I am excited that fall is coming. For the first time, I will attempt a fall garden (albeit a container garden on our front porch) featuring spinach, lettuces, onions, and whatever else lends itself to fall planting in Austin. This renewed gardening spirit is due to the fact that my lantana has several (10-12) small blooms on it! So wonderful! This is happening because - best news - it seems that maybe our days of 100 plus degree heat are leaving. Fabulous!

Home again, home again

It's so nice to come home from work, or school, or whatever, and have no "responsible" things you have to do for the rest of the day. Today I get home, and it's Friday - I say hi to Friedrich and Stu, change, talk to my dad on the phone, grab a cookie, check the mail, catch up on news and life in cyberspace. Just easy stuff, you know. I was a bit sick yesterday so I didn't make plans for tonight. I'll just chill.

I may do some constructive things, like planting the herbage for Stuart, a little research on phylogeny and primate cladistics a la molecular data, but I will definitely do a lot of stuff because I want to, not because it has to get done.

So anyway, rejoice, the weekend is here.

What are you doing this weekend? Ms. P is going to ACL fest with her peeps, as are J&J. Evidentally, so will some local celebs and their friends (I'm sure you'll see some pictures on a certain celebrity gossip site), and of course, thousands of other people. Good for them. I decided I didn't wanna try the heat, and most importantly, I couldn't quite afford the price tag.

And I don't need live music. I can just watch old David Bowie music videos on You Tube.

French Quarter

Even though our apartment has 80% senior residents, the French Quarter can get pretty rowdy. Some of these wonderful people (not sarcasm) shout at each other across the courtyard or down the corridors. It is really very amusing.

Until it got into the mid 90s regularly, when I came home from school/work a group of ladies would be sitting in lawn chairs across the courtyard from our apartment. I don't know what they talked about, but there was almost always laughter.

A skinny, white-haired, tall man who lives on the first floor sometimes walks around in overalls carrying a radio that is blasting some kind of polka variant. And this morning, at around 8:30, there were two kids screaming and splashing in the pool. It's pretty nice here.
