Cry me a river - I lost my iPod! (And a question for you, my friends)

True, it is only a shuffle (the old version - the shape of a lighter); true, it is most likely somewhere in my apartment; true, my radio and cassette player work in my car and I have iTunes at work.

But I need me my Kool Keith on my morning commute! In the last several weeks, I have been listening almost exclusively to his soothing voice and eloquent raps about robots, secretaries, the feds, spacemen, hot wings, and gynecological matters. I have no way of getting him onto a cassette. After I type this, I am going to put Black Elvis-Lost in Space and Octagonecologist on CDs. And Matthew.

So here's my question:

What is the most recent album/artist/composer/song/genre of music that you have discovered? That you love and can/couldn't stop listening too? How did you find it? What do you love about it?

I will post my answer later in the comments section.

Thanks!

PS At work I listen to Fine Girls twenty times in a row and daydream he's singing to me.

I guess I've got three, but the fervor you're talking about only lasted about a week for each.

First it was Peter Bjorn and John. I saw the video for "Young Folks" and I was sold. As for why -- well, because of this lyric from "Objects of My Affection:"

But of course some days I just lie around/
And hardly exist/
And I can't tell apart what I'm eating/
From my hand or my wrist/
Because flesh is flesh/
Flesh is flesh is flesh/
The difference is thin

Then came "Paper Planes" by MIA but only because I heard a remix on the radio -- the one where the gunshots are the beat and the song speeds up and slows down. And why? Because "MIA want to take your money" is a great line.

Now it's "Take Me to the Riot" by Stars. I'm not sure why I like it so much, but I really do. Over and over and over, for sure.

A great 80s influenced synth-pop track. It just makes me want to dance where ever I listen to it. I'm such a retro-whore. If it sounds as though it could have been recorded in the 80s, I'll pretty much love it!

I am now listening to all of these songs...

I forgot one -- "Girls & Boys Make Songs" by Lispector. It's basically about how both girls and boys want to be Debbie Harry. And that's true, right? Hell yeah, it is.

CWS, I am glad you posted three different artists! more to listen to. I am familiar with the first two - M.I.A. is on my iPod (RIP) and I miss her on my commutes. I think my favorite track from Kala is Come Around with Timbaland. Very good song to sing with the windows rolled down eating a popsicle and it's 102 outside at 5:15pm. However, I just noticed the other day that this is an EDITED version I have!?!?!?!?! No way, I am so not for censorship, I am ashamed this happened. I also love Mango Pickle Down River featuring the Wilcannia Mob. Didgeridoo can be so awesome (also see Kate Bush's The Dreaming). I am not familiar with Stars, so thanks for the introduction, I like that song, I'll have to listen to more. I liked the video, too.

jesus, why am i not surprised it's a synth-track? you are an 80's whore, and that is one of the reasons I need you in my life. the track is surprisingly addictive. I am a Chopin whore - Nocturne #13 makes me cry so often it's ridiculous. He wrote it for me, you know. I've listened to that for days on end (with a few other nocturnes sprinkled in for good measure).

me, well, it's been pretty much kool keith and the black lips exclusively since May. except for the three week (or so) affair with Thelonious Monk. why? well, I really like the music, yes, this is true. I am in love with kool keith. I would probably have his babies if he wanted. dr. octagon is brilliant. why did I not feel so attracted to the music when I first heard it years ago? I can't tell you this. I wasn't ready for it, I guess.

and the black lips are so incredibly amusing, wonderful, short songs bursting that I have to sing/scream/dance to. I had been listening to them on/off since march 07 after they came to sxsw, and I bought good bad not evil shortly after it came out, but I didn't fall for them until I also got let it bloom.

I love singing along to music, and these two are great for that. I am living in a fantasy world of an endless concert in my head - my iTunes is on constant at work if I'm on my computer and don't have a phone call. Those are the two I listen to most often. then there are the weekly M.I.A., Xiu Xiu, Coltrane, Monk, Miles Davis, PJ Harvey and Kate Bush binges. and when I get home from work I usually put my iTunes on random so I don't turn into an obsessive freak.

and there was the day I listened to In Lust You Can Hear the Axe Fall (Xiu Xiu) 80-something times. I hate to admit it, but that's what the play count said. I also can listen to Yuri G (PJ Harvey) on repeat for hours - I would so rock that song if I could play guitar. I would rock a lot of songs. I sound like such an idiot sometimes!

And yes, we all want to be Debbie Harry! for at least a little while.

I'm a big fan of Vagabond Opera now. They do a better description of their music than I can: "1920’s European Cabaret! Vintage Americana! Balkan Belly Dance! Neo-Classical Opera! Old World Yiddish Theater!"

Let me tell you, their shows are a trip. Accordions, handlebar mustaches, and professional hula-hoopers unite!
